Osmo Vänskä, the Finnish Music Director of the Minnesota Orchestra, returns to the Grand Teton Music Festival fresh off a recent tour with his home orchestra to Carnegie Hall where the New York Times complimented the conductor as “exacting and exuberant” -perfect words to describe his program here in the Tetons.
First, the concert begins a bit of dramatic flair with the overture to Verdi’s opera, La Forza del Destino. Then harpist Naoko Yoshino joins the orchestra for the North American premiere of Sebastien Currier’s Traces for Harp and Orchestra. A co-commission of Grand Teton Music Festival and the Berlin Philharmonic, the piece received its world premiere with Festival Music Director Donald Runnicles conducting the Berlin Philharmonic in December of 2009.
The immortal popular appeal of Tchaikovsky’s ravishing 6th Symphony – the Pathétique – is sure to send concertgoers home swooning.
